Web development is like baking. You could make the most beautiful cake in the world, but if it's made with bad ingredients or without the consumer in mind, no one is going to eat it. I am a front-end developer who focuses on combining the right ingredients to create memorable experiences. I keep users coming back for more.

College of Arts & Letters Rebranding

The Deliverables: Site Maps | Complete Websites

In 2011, Michigan State University's College of Arts and Letters rebranded. In order to keep this brand consistent, many of the departments within the college needed to update their web presence. These new websites didn't just need to be rebranded, they required a user-experience overhaul. Many of these websites needed new informational structures, and the faculty needed a way to maintain the content on the websites to keep them current and the information relevant.

I met with faculty in about 10 departments and centers to reorganiz their existing content into a more user-friendly and intuitive architecture. I then took the existing content on their website and transferred it into a Concrete5 template that followed the new branding of the college. To ensure these websites continued to be updated and maintained, I held workshops to train faculty to use Concrete5 and keep their website up-to-date.

cls transformation

Prior to the college's rebranding, I worked with a group of developers to redesign the Center for Language Teaching Advancement's (CeLTA) website to a design that fit within Michigan States' brand standards and fits their needs. I worked on designing the new workflow as well as coding the approved mockups in HTML and CSS, while attending biweekly meetings with CeLTA to ensure we were meeting their needs with the design.

This year the Community Language School (CLS) wished to redesign their website. Because they are a program of CeLTA, they could not simply use the standard Concrete5 template. They requested a design that matched CeLTA but was more child friendly. Using these requests, I recreated the CeLTA design to follow current brand standards and put it into Concrete5, allowing for simple maintenance.

It was incredibly important to CeLTA to form an identity around the fact that they are a language center. Because MSU branding policy does not allow departments to have logos, CeLTA wanted a design aspect that highlighted their language orientation. Our team decided to recreate the speech bubble effect in their original logo in the design.

Using CSS3 and CSS triangles, I created a speech bubble, which is now being utilized in CeLTA and CLS.

In order to recreate CeLTA's sidebar boxes in Concrete5 for CLS, I needed to make it possible for boxes to be added and removed easily.

To do this, I created an h1 style, which created the rounded corners and green background. This way CLS can add and remove side bar pieces as needed within the Concrete5 admin view.
